The Hackney Empire is not going down without a fight. The meeting described below has been postponed until Thursday March 11 from 6.30pm at the Empire. Developing company Thornsett Group wish to demolish the Bullion Roomoffice and rehearsal complex at the side of the theatre in Mare Street and build a seven -storey building comprising flats, community and cafe. The £4.5 million project willhelp the theatre to pay off their debts. The Council have not yet approved the application. Without this development, the Empire will probably close very soon. Officially shut down at the end of January for nine months (although many observers saw the 'temporary' closure as the death knell of the famous and historic 100-year-old theatre), the venue is nevertheless staging a few events and concerts over the period (see hackneyempire.co.uk). There is also a public meeting in the theatre's main hall on 25 February, beginning at 6.30pm, at which management will explain the current position and answer questions from the public. |
