| Church Street two-way again |
|
At last, the one-way traffic diversion on Church Street has been removed. Two-way traffic has returned to the street, as the road surfacing works have come to an end. The pavement works, at the end of the road between Wilmer Place and the High Street, will continue without the need for a traffic diversion, and are expected to be completed in April. Councillor Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: 'We have worked closely with residents and the Stoke Newington Business Association to ensure the scheme was delivered as soon as possible and to the highest possible standard. The investment in Church Street has created a safer, more pleasant and coordinated environment that is sure to benefit residents, businesses and visitors.' Well, perhaps, but it took long enough, although the contractors have done quite a good job. Let's hope the utility companies don't get wind of this, as they'll be back out in force again, ripping out the drains, the gas pipes and the electrical wiring. And, legally, there is very little the Council can do about it. A few months' grace would be welcome till we all get our breath back. On the High Street, however, the roadworks continue, pissing off traders and pedestrians alike.
