A SINGLE MAN (12A)

A striking directorial debut from controversial fashion designer Tom Ford with the performance of a lifetime from Colin Firth. Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, it's the story of George Falconer (Firth), a college professor who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner, Jim. A series of events and encounters over just one day ends with a life-changing decision. Charley (Julianne Moore) is his closest friend, but she too is wrestling with her own doubts about the future. Kenny (Nicholas Hoult), a young student coming to terms with his sexuality, sees George, his teacher, as a kindred spirit.

Classic film noir and silent comedy are the starting points for a flight of visual imagination that knows no bounds as AMELIE director Jean Pierre-Jeunet brings his inimitable brand of magical realism to a comic tale of revenge. Orphaned at a tender age when his father is killed by a landmine, video store clerk Bazil (Dany Boon) himself becomes the accidental victim of a shooting. Unexpectedly surviving the incident, Bazil is determined to bring down the multinational arms manufacturers who have caused him so much misery. With some help from his friends, a band of misfits with some very strange, but useful, talents, he embarks on an over-the top series of escapades each of which is more elaborate and entertaining than the last.

In the search to find their perfect home the longtime couple set off to visit friends and family in order to find their perfect home before the birth of their first child. The result is a humorous, witty, touching and beautifully acted journey of discovery as the couple search out old friends and reconnect with long lost relatives.

In 1960s London suburbia, bright, pretty and hard-working 16-year old Jenny Mellor is focused on achieving her father's goal: a place at Oxford. But Jenny can't wait for adult life to begin, and with the arrival of the urbane, witty and twice her age David Goldman, it does.

Sunday 14 February • Valentine's Day Double Bill

A witty adult fairy tale from the great romantic philosopher of the French New Wave. After an intense but whirlwind holiday romance, Felicie and Charles lose contact. Five years later and Felicie is unable to commit to either of her two current pursuers, because of a premonition that someday she will again find Charles, her one true love and unknowing father of her child.

Rohmer's final masterpiece is a witty elegant tale of love, faith, jealousy, desire and cross-dressing set in a land of myth. When Astrea is led to believe that Celadon has been unfaithful to her, she banishes him for her sight forever - but Celadon finds the perfect disguise to win back his lover's affections. It's funny, touching, fearless and magical and a fitting farewell from a film maker whose work was filled with many such cinematic and sensuous delights.

Sunday 28 February • Malice and Foreboding Double Bill

A vicious series of poison-pen letters spreads rumours, suspicion and fear among the inhabitants of a small French town - with the main focus of attention being the town's doctor, Remy Germain, a man with a mysterious past. Accused of being an abortionist and adulterer, Germain will be run out of town unless he can uncover the true identity of the unknown letter writer. A masterly suspense thriller that captures the reality of life during the German occupation and the paranoid culture that went with it.

The schoolteacher observes, investigates and edges towards the truth. Told with the same chilling brilliance and icy exactitude as Haneke's HIDDEN this Cannes Palme d'Or prizewinner is a masterly and audacious portrait of a time and place in history that also offers an insight into horrors still to come.

NO DISTANCE LEFT TO RUN (15) 11.15pm

Blur reunited after a nine year split. Intimate and frank new interviews with the band members recall the highs and lows: from Colchester origins, through the heady Britpop years and on to the present with he band's triumphant headline return at Glastonbury and Hyde Park. Exceptional live concert footage is combined with some fascinating archive material that even includes Damon Albarn's school play performances as well as early gig footage, television appearances and backstage video.
