Basket House Village Universe, a new art gallery based in an old warehouse in Stoke Newington, opened on 12 February with a solo show - 'Stories from this day' - from artist Charlotte Lindsay. The exhibition will run until 21 February. The gallery is tucked away in an area of London that is fast developing a reputation for artistic enterprise.
Her work creates 'a world of suggested spaces, which mutate and metamorphosise between man-made and natural environments. The dialogue between the characters depicted suggests an ongoing cycle of paranoia and hope, rage and innocence, discovery and denial. This show includes recent sculptures and prints which interplay with the visual narrative of the main body of paintings.' Originally from Cornwall, Charlotte Lindsay studied art at the Falmouth College of Art and Sheffield Hallam University. She now lives in London and has exhibited at a variety of venues, including Leeds College of Art. Built in 1901, legend has it that BHVU housed a bakery, a porn studio, a barracks and a basket-weaving workshop. The gallery's name was inspired by Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck, who observed the way in which the Dogon people of Mali constructed their buildings. 'All the material objects from the smallest to the largest are charged with extra meaning and are identified in stages with the totality of creation', he said. He summarised this as the 'basket-house-village-universe'. Basket House Village Universe is located at Unit A, 2 Leswin Place, London N16.
