For centuries Stokey was a hidden village on the fringes of London, home to dissenters and radical writers such as Daniel Defoe and the gothic author Edgar Allen Poe. This walk, run by Hackney historian, Rachel Kolsky, will take you on an eye-opening tour of Stoke Newington's history from left-field backwater to the vibrant and creative hub of north London.

Hackney's Gardeners Remembered

An historical afternoon at St John's Churchyard. Come and find out about Hackney's garden history, make crafts and enjoy storytelling and drama in beautiful historical surroundings.

Come and join in with some historical fun at St John at Hackney Churchyard at a family event, suitable for all ages. Meet Hackney's famous 18th century society gardeners, the Loddiges; make paper flowers, masks and head-dresses; design your own pop-up churchyard garden and enjoy seeing history brought to life through live performances. The afternoon ends with a spellbinding story true story, taking place inside the magical setting of Hackney's oldest building, St Augustine's tower.

Make a weird and wonderful outfit based on your favourite Hackney street or building. Make a big sparkly tower block, or a tunic fashioned from golden leaves. Hackney Museum's artist in residence is on hand to help children and big people get all dressed up for this year's Hackney One Carnival on 8 August.

"Journeys"

A showcase of the film work of students from Hackney Free and Parochial Secondary School. Exploring the changes in Hackney as we move towards the 2012 Olympics.

Students from Hackney Free and Parochial Secondary School showcase short films they have made during a two-week placement with a professional film-maker. The students have explored on film, the concept of journey, personal, cultural and historical, as Hackney on the cusp of the 2012 Olympics. The project is part of London 2012 Cultural Olympiad programme Stories of the World.
